Adolescents with eating disorders use herbal remedies for weight control and other purposes, Dr. Debra Katzman reported at the annual meeting of the Society for Adolescent Psychiatry.
"Heath care providers must be prepared to ask about the use of herbal remedies," said Dr. Katzman of the University of Toronto.
She and her associates recruited 46 adolescents who met DSM-IV criteria for an eating disorder to complete a 92-item, self-administered, anonymous survey. Subjects had a mean age of 15 years and were predominately female (98%).
Seventeen (37%) of the 46 teens used herbal remedies to treat their eating disorder. Of these 17, 35% reported using herbal remedies for weight control purposes: to induce vomiting, to decrease appetite, or, as a laxative.
