TORONTO -- Teenagers can achieve high continuation rates and low levels of side effects with Depo-Provera if they are given a good deal of support and counseling, the results of two studies suggest.
"There are things that the physician can do like precounseling and counseling and--most importantly--being available and accessible, because these kids want an answer when they have a problem, and if they don't get it they will discontinue," Dr. Hatim Omar said in an interview at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.
In a review of 299 young women (aged 13-21) who started DepoProvera, the continuation rate was 63% at 1 year, which is higher than the previously reported rate of 51% in adults, he said in a poster presentation at the meeting.
"This is the highest rate I've seen, especially in teens," said Dr. Omar, director of adolescent medicine at the University of Kentucky, Lexington.
