SAN FRANCISCO -- Ovarian ablation or suppression shows promise as an adjuvant therapy in breast cancer, particularly in premenopausal women with receptor- positive lesions.
In fact, the positive effect of adjuvant chemotherapy may be due in part to chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea, Dr. Nancy E. Davidson said at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Ovarian ablation can be achieved by oophorectomy or radiotherapy, and temporary ovarian suppression can be achieved by the use of LHRH agonists. Dr. Davidson of the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center in Baltimore reviewed a number of studies of ovarian ablation and suppression alone or with tamoxifen. These studies show an approximate one-third reduction in the rate of disease recurrence, death from breast cancer, and overall mortality.
