SAN DIEGO -- Women in labor who sit in whirlpools are not alone in the tub.
Whirlpools available to women for relaxation during labor may contain bacteria that are not eliminated by hospital cleaning protocols, Dr. Ingrid M. Browne said in a poster presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology.
Approximately 36 cultures taken from whirlpools at the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York immediately after use yielded a mixture of Staphylo coccus epidermidis, Pseudomonas, and Acinetobacter, Dr. Browne said in an interview.
Although cleaning eliminated the bacteria in the test site's tubs, the investigators found P. acidovorans in the drains 6 hours after cleaning.
