Mar. 27--Consumer spending rose for the fifth straight month in February, confirming the economy's chief growth engine is still humming.
Spending was up 0.2 percent in February from a month earlier, the Commerce Department said, slower than January's 0.5 percent jump. That's because consumers downshifted their buying patterns away from autos and other big-ticket items and toward restaurants and retail stores.
