Don't even try to shoot off a bottle rocket in Albuquerque over the July Fourth holiday, or undercover firefighters may turn up at your door, a tough-talking Chief Morris Huling warned Friday.
About 150 firefighters many wearing street clothes and driving unmarked vehicles will patrol the streets between now and July 4 searching for prohibited fireworks, Huling said at a news conference.
"They won't drive up with lights and sirens," Huling warned. All firefighters have the authority to issue citations and make arrests, he said. "We'll confiscate everything you've got and issue a $300 fine."
It is a misdemeanor in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County to buy, sell or use fireworks that fly more than 10 feet high or travel outside a 6-foot radius. The law also bars explosives louder than a cap gun.
