Arts and Crafts Fair brings together New Mexico artists, art lovers and entertainment
Famed San Ildefonso potter Maria Martinez helped cut the ribbon at the very first New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair in Albuquerque's Old Town Plaza.
In the 40 years since, the annual outdoor fair has become a venerable part of the New Mexico landscape.
Begun by Old Town merchants as a way to support New Mexico artisans, the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair has continued to show only works by New Mexico residents.
"It's a juried show and the caliber of the work is quite high," said Eric Freyer, director of standards for the fair. "We've been doing this for 40 years, so we kind of have a historical place within the community."
This year's 40th anniversary event opens Thursday with Preview Night and a silent art auction at the Bolack Building at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds. Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation will host the gala evening, which will include food, music and the auction of about 250 donated artworks.
