The International Order of Rainbow for Girls will convene for its 68th annual New Mexico Grand Assembly at the Sheraton Uptown Hotel, Wednesday through Saturday for its "Dreams Begin With You" session.
Erika Maryl Waters, Grand Worthy Advisor from Hobbs Assembly No. 15, will preside.
A formal banquet and presentation of all state officers will open the session, concluding with the installation of 2001-2002 officers, followed by a formal dance.
The order is a service and character-building organization for girls ages 11 to 20, that emphasizes being a good person and preparing for the future. Life skills such as public speaking, parliamentary procedure and proper etiquette, as well as loyalty to home, church and nation, and community service are emphasized.
Stressing the importance of literacy, Waters' Special Service Project is called "A Rainbow of Reading." Members of New Mexico assemblies inspire young children to read through various activities, such as reading to them in day care centers, libraries or family groups.
Rainbow girls of Ashlar Assembly No. 58 in Albuquerque adopted a 4th-grade classroom at Mescalero Elementary School in Mescalero. They collected and donated 400 books to the class, which the children were allowed to keep. Photos of Rainbow girls were sent with the books so the class could chose pen pals, increasing the students' writing skills.
