Apr. 15--Gas prices have been rising for weeks. So have energy costs. Last month, consumers also paid more for clothing, hotel rooms and other goods, enough more that it awoke some economists' fears of inflation and rising interest rates.
Those were the realities and predictions in Wednesday's Consumer Price Index report, which showed inflation rising for a fourth straight month after being kept in check for more than two years.
The news was both a worrisome sign of a return to rising prices and a natural part of the U.S. economy's pickup.
The government reported the index rose 0.5 percent in March, with an array of prices contributing. Consumer price increases from January to March would translate to a 5.1 percent increase for the whole year, compared with 1.9 percent for all of 2003.
