As predicted by Moore's Law, the number of transistors on a given chip size has doubled every 18 months. In 1971, Intel's 4004 microprocessor had 2300 transistors and required less than a watt of power. Pentium 4 processors now contain more than 50 million transistors and can require more than 100 watts (W). Moore's Law appears to be likely to remain valid until 2010 and beyond.
