SOUTH BEND, Ind. _ We've seen lots of variety from Florida State this season. We've seen good, bad and ugly. We've seen some not-so-pretty wins, an unsightly loss and the occasional impressive victory.
What's debatable is whether we've seen FSU at its best. But maybe we just did.
"I can't explain why we were able to do what we did tonight," FSU coach Bobby Bowden said after a resounding 37-0 victory at Notre Dame.
"We picked a night to play our best probably offensively and defensively and kicking. And again, I don't know how."
It was that kind of afternoon Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium, where the Seminoles pummeled the overmatched Irish, avenging last year's deflating loss at Tallahassee and keeping the Seminoles (8-1) in the hunt for the national championship _ Irish tradition and history notwithstanding.
This was about as complete a performance as FSU has turned in this season, one where the dominance extended to every phase of the game, leaving the Irish (2-6) merciless. The whipping administered by the Seminoles was the first home shutout of Notre Dame in 25 years and most lopsided home shutout loss since Oklahoma left here a 40-0 winner in 1956.
