MIAMI _ Give the NHL credit for trying to fatten scoring by slimming goalie pads. And give Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo credit for knowing it wouldn't work.
Luongo was wearing an ``I told you so'' smile as he said, ``I told you so. That's my comment. It has nothing to do with the equipment.''
No scoring binges, just a lot of further purging of offense. The average goals per game going into Friday's games was down to 4.93 from 5.30. There were 174 shutouts last season. In just over three weeks, goalies have put up 31 zeroes.
And this is the time of year when goals are supposed to be the easiest to get.
The consensus is goalies are better than they used to be, defensive systems are better and some rules changes haven't worked the way the NHL thought they would.
It isn't just current players and coaches who feel that way. Grant Fuhr, the most athletic goalie of the 1980s, said the same thing in a conference call last week.
