MIAMI _ Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells continued to pull some surprises last week in an attempt to push the Cowboys to a playoff spot in his first season.
But they are surprises with an idea behind them.
As they play host to Washington on Sunday, the Cowboys begin a stretch of five games in November, including four at home. At 5-2 and in first place in the NFC East by one game over Philadelphia, this is a crucial stretch if the Cowboys, who went into the season in rebuilding mode, are to vault into the playoffs.
PERSONNEL SHAKEUPS
The surprises started last Sunday at Tampa Bay when, during a 16-0 loss to the Buccaneers, Parcells pulled longtime star guard Larry Allen during the second half. Allen, a perennial Pro Bowler, had given up two sacks and claimed he hurt his knee when it collided with an opponent's helmet. But Parcells wasn't letting Allen off the hook this past week; Allen wasn't on the injury report.
The team then signed running back Adrian Murrell. Surprising? Just a tad. Except for a stint in training camp with Carolina in 2001, Murrell hasn't played since 2000.
