DURHAM, N.H. _ Three months before Democrats start to choose their presidential nominee, most Americans aren't following the competition, the party's identity remains unclear and the race is wide open.
Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean is the front-runner, but any one of several candidates could win the nomination and face President Bush a year from now.
Three factors make the Democratic race unpredictable. First, polls show that 4 out of 5 Democrats aren't paying close attention yet despite nonstop campaigning and almost weekly nationally televised debates among the nine declared candidates. Most Americans won't start paying attention until next year.
Second, the unusually large field makes it difficult for voters to focus and for candidates to break through the din and establish distinct identities.
