It's too bad that the recorded sound here is uneven, with the voices often in the background and at times hard to discern, because this is a superb performance. The La Scala production showcases Marilyn Home at her best, surrounded by a cast and conductor far superior to those in her commercial recording of the role for Erato. While Home is the chief attraction, the other singers are exemplary, and Claudio Abbado conducts a tight ensemble that comes across as vividly humorous as it is polished and precise.
It would be hard to overstate the virtues of Horne as a Rossini mezzo. For one thing, the voice has "presence." From her first declamation of "Cruda sorte," her unique timbre dominates the atmosphere. Add to this her ability to color each word and phrase to bring out its exact nuance and meaning, her impeccable coloratura and unfailing sense of pitch and rhythm, and you have the consummate artist that Home was in her ...
