It must be pretty difficult these days to pitch a recording of "arias I like" without some kind of gimmick. While the device employed here--pieces sung in English translation--is not without merit, the helter-skelter assembly of this recital is unsatisfying. (In contrast, Patrice Michaels's recent Cedille CD, Divas of Mozart's Day, is a great example of how to organize far-flung material.) Arias, a couple of ensembles, bel canto, French stuff and Mozart are presented, with Handel opening and closing the disc. The ever-popular "Tornami a vagheggiar" (Come, take me in your arms), from Handel's Alcina, begins brightly, and Semele's "O sleep, why dost thou leave me?" works well as a peaceful encore after the exuberant waltz from Offenbach's Robinson Crusoe.
