Oct. 22--After weathering 14 straight quarterly losses, Atlanta-based Internet provider EarthLink turned a profit for the third quarter ended Sept. 30.
It was the first profitable quarter since Atlanta-based MindSpring and California-based EarthLink merged in February 2000 to form the new company that kept the EarthLink name and Atlanta as the headquarters.
EarthLink stock soared 13.3 percent on the news, closing up $1 at $8.52.
Garry Betty, president and chief executive, Tuesday credited operational efficiency as one reason for the turnaround.
