Joyce Thompson's "Sailing My Shoe to Timbuktu" is an affirmation of the power and purity of the natural world and its ability to improve relationships for those in touch with its many wonders.

For Thompson, the child of an alcoholic father and a distant, career-driven mother, reverence for the earth is part of her life even as a child - a way to rise above her tumultuous family life.

At age 4, she says, she took off one of her brand-new blue Keds while playing along a creek with her uncle and spontaneously set it sailing in complete faith that it would get to the ends of the earth unscathed.

As she matures, this faith helps her through divorce and single parenting. It is further shaped when she meets and marries her soul mate, a man intent on becoming a priest of the earth-based religion Santeria.
