``Beachcomber'' by Karen Robards; Atria ($25)

___

No one does romantic suspense better than Karen Robards.

"Beachcomber" proves that again.

Christy finds herself unwittingly involved with the mob. In a desperate attempt to dislodge herself from its clutches, she agrees to make a delivery on Okracoke Island (Outer Banks, N.C.). The deal is that once she does that, she'll be let alone.

Part of the problem is her ex-boyfriend, Michael, who sits near the top among this mob's bad guys. Because she was his girlfriend, the FBI has her on a list of suspected bad guys. So when agent Luke shows up on Okracoke, he's there to watch Christy.
