The truth is that people have been glooming and dooming about this whole human condition thing for a long time. Irish poet W.B. Yeats, who died in 1939, fretted that "things fall apart." But when contemporary political pundits as different as Molly Ivins and Bill O'Reilly declare in new books that the center is not holding, it's time to pay attention.
