The US Defense Department may use naturally occurring nutrients to increase the health, stamina and alertness of soldiers.

Tests are being conducted to find nutraceutical substances that will benefit troops. For instance, scientists are investigating caffeine derived from coffee plants for its ability to increase physical and mental alertness. And the team is studying compounds from echinacea and turmeric to assess their anti-inflammatory qualifies, which are thought to be similar to aspirin or Motrin but without side effects.
