Women with the highest intake of tomato-based foods, which are rich sources of the antioxidant lycopene, have a lower risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to a report appearing in the July 2003 issue of The Journal of Nutrition.
Women who consumed seven servings or more of tomato-based foods such as tomato sauce each week were nearly 30 percent less likely to experience CVD compared to women with intakes of less than one and a half servings per week.
In fact, women who are more than 10 lycopene-rich servings per week had an even more pronounced reduction in risk--65 percent--for several specific CVD outcomes, including heart attack and stroke.
