Eating disorders and substance abuse are two sides of the same :coin, according to some leading researchers.
At a meeting on eating disorders and substance abuse sponsored by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA), experts challenged primary care physicians to do a better job of recognizing and screening for these comorbid conditions.
The prevalence of comorbidity between eating disorders and substance abuse was revealed in a research review of 51 studies conducted by CASA. Among bulimic women in these studies, 23% had comorbid alcohol abuse and dependence, and more than 41% were smokers, reported Dr. Joseph A. Califano, president of CASA.
