Food allergy is a serious concern for people who are sensitized to natural rubber latex, Kim Elizabeth Mudd, R.N., reported in a poster session at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.
In a study of 2,616 health care workers to determine the prevalence of self-re ported food allergy at the University of Maryland Medical System, a positive natural rubber latex (NRL)--specific IgE serology was detected in 7%. Following NRL exposure to powdered gloves, 22.4% of this group reported allergic symptoms, noted Ms. Mudd of the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
