Ascorbic acid reverses the vascular endothelial dysfunction that can occur in women with previous preeclampsia, said Dr. John C. Chambers and his associates at Hammersmith Hospital, London.
This finding bolsters the theory that endothelial dysfunction associated with preeclampsia is mediated by oxidative stress because ascorbic acid is a powerful antioxidant that scavenges oxygen-derived free radicals.
To evaluate the extent of endothelial dysfunction, they measured brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation and glyceryl trinitrate-induced dilatation in 113 women with previous preeclampsia who were a median 3 years post partum, and 48 controls.
