SAN FRANCISCO -- There really is such a thing as too much calcium.
These days, Dr. Steven T. Harris is more likely to see patients who are consuming an excess of calcium rather than too little, he said at a meeting on endocrinology and metabolism sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco.
Many people seem to believe that if consuming 1,500 mg/day of calcium can help stave off bone loss, then 3,000 mg/day must be even better, he said. The body's natural defense mechanisms, however, get rid of excess calcium through urine. "If you overdose on calcium supplementation, all you really do is increase urinary calcium excretion," noted Dr. Harris of the university
