ELLICOTT CITY, MD. -- Clinicians can use the mnemonic "CHAD" to remember the essential elements of osteoporosis treatment: calcium, hormone replacement therapy, add-on treatments (bisphosphonates and calcitonin), and vitamin D, Dr. Redonda Miller said a meeting of the Maryland chapter of the American College of Physicians--American Society of Internal Medicine.
"No one can possibly memorize the huge list of therapies, let alone their indications and contraindications. I vote--no pun intended--that we simplify things, and I've come up with a nonpartisan mnemonic: CHAD," said Dr. Miller of Johns Hopkins University Baltimore.
Every patient with osteoporosis should take calcium supplements, even if they think they're getting enough through their diets. "The average adult diet in the United States is calcium deficient, containing only 600 mg per day," she noted.
Osteoporosis patients need 1,500 mg per day and should take no more than 500 mg at a time. "They need small doses taken with to food to enhance absorption," Dr. Miller said.
