The benefits of 5 years of adjuvant tamoxifen therapy in women with operable breast cancer persist at least 15 years, but there is no additional benefit in those who take the drug for longer than 5 years, a recent study shows.
The study is an update of the Scottish Adjuvant Tamoxifen Trial, a randomized study initiated in 1978. The study compared the effects of adjuvant tamoxifen therapy taken for 5 years after mastectomy with outcomes in patients who began taking tamoxifen only if disease recurred.
A survival advantage and a decreased risk of disease recurrence were noted in the patients taking tamoxifen for 5 years.
