CHICAGO -- Patients who have a breast abnormality seen incidentally at the time of chest or abdominal imaging should not be alarmed, but they should be told of the importance of following it up, Dr. Mjad Rasheed said at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.
"According to our study, the chances that they have breast cancer are low--but they are real," cautioned Dr. Rasheed, a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Dr. Rasheed found in a study that a breast mass detected incidentally during CT examinations of the chest or abdomen had an 8% chance of being malignant, although the likelihood was higher if the patient had a history of breast cancer.
