Patients with human papillomavirus 18-related cervical carcinomas have a poorer prognosis than those with other types of oncogenic HPV, particularly when the cancer is detected at an early stage, according to results of a recent study
Of 296 patients who were diagnosed with cervical cancer, the 86 with tumors related to HPV-18 were more likely to die within the median 51-month follow-up period than the 210 with HPV-16-related tumors, said Stephen M. Schwartz, Ph.D., and his associates at the University of Washington, Seattle (J. Clin. Oncol. 19[73:1906-15, 2001).
The cumulative total mortality was 34% in the HPV-18 patients, and 28% in the HPV-16 patients. ...
