A lifelong resident of Oslo, Irgens-Jensen (1894-1969) was an accomplished pianist with no formal training in composition. In addition to oratorios and a few large-scale symphonic works, he wrote and published hundreds of songs; during World War II he set several texts by resistance poets and later won prizes and accolades from Norwegian national organizations.
