Werther boasts one of the strongest recorded legacies of all operas--certainly, of all French operas. From the marvelous 1931 Opera Comique version, with three of the greatest singers France ever produced (Georges Thill, Ninon Vallin, Germaine Feraldy), almost every recorded traversal has shown substantial merit; would one could say as much about Faust or Carmen!
Naxos's unstarry new version might then seem de trop, but actually (especially given the budget price) it makes a fine choice for both Werther newcomers and those in search of a characterful "second" version in good "live acoustic" sound. Much of its charm comes from the idiomatically nuanced specificity of the 1999 live performances in Lille, from which it derives. As in previous recordings, Jean-Claude Casadesus displays his Orchestre National de Lille as a force to be reckoned with; and he catches convincingly the ebb and flow of Massenet's increasingly passionate "bourgeois tragedy."
