The most exciting place on earth this season may be the kingdom of Judea, but not for the usual political, religious and military reasons. In one of the most eagerly anticipated role debuts in years, Karita Mattila will unveil her Salome at the Paris Opera this month (opens Sept. 23). Based on the evidence of recent Met appearances in Die Meistersinger, Fidelio, Elektra and Jenufa, the Finnish soprano is at the height of her considerable powers, and now she turns to one of the most demanding roles in the repertory. With her dramatic and vocal abilities (not to mention her glamorous beauty), she's certain to be a knockout.
