WALNUT CREEK, Calif. _ Sometimes you know you're about to see something you'll never forget. It became apparent that Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were going to break Roger Maris' single-season home run record during the summer of 1998. We just had to wait for the moment to come.

Other things you don't see coming. The most recent Super Bowl probably always will remain a surreal slideshow in the mind's eye. Some of the most memorable events, such as Game 6 of last year's World Series, for example, unfold slowly before ending both unexpectedly and unforgettably.

The Barry Bonds saga has so many plot twists that it can't truly be appreciated without the benefit of hindsight.
