CHICAGO_The Chicago Cubs made the Cardinals their captive audience for more than four hours Monday afternoon at Wrigley Field. When the rain, the waiting and the runs finally ended, the Cubs and starting pitcher Mark Prior had locked down the first game of their five-game series, 7-0, before a diluted announced crowd of 38,410.
The scheduled 1:20 p.m. start became a 4:17 rain delay with the teams due to return on Tuesday morning for a day-night doubleheader.
Prior made the Cubs' wait seem a little shorter. The Cubs' righthanded ace (14-5) prevented the Cardinals bats from ever getting started as he held them to five hits in eight innings. Cardinals starter Woody Williams (14-7) endured his shortest outing this season -- 4[ETH] innings_and yielded his biggest inning, a six-run fifth inning.
