SAN JOSE, Calif. _ When the 49ers open the regular season Sunday against the Chicago Bears, they will unveil their new coach, Dennis Erickson, and his new aggressive approach.
At least one thing, however, will be just as it was under Coach Steve Mariucci. Garrison Hearst, 32, will start at running back and share a significant number of carries with Kevan Barlow.
Erickson announced that decision after practice Monday, ending an uneventful training camp duel. Hearst has started all 61 of his games since 1997 and Barlow was unable to unseat him, despite marginally better statistics in exhibition games.
