Byline: Jeff Miller
MIAMI _ Jeff Conine walked into yesterday on Monday, carrying a Baltimore Orioles bag, a strange-but-familiar Marlins jersey awaiting him, and prepared for a fresh start with his former team.
The first thing he did was remove his ring, his World Series ring, the one he picked up as a member of the 1997 Marlins.
He said he was excited to be back. Why was this?
"Home," Conine said. "It's home."
And isn't that the object in baseball, to go home?
Only this sport offers stories like this one, stories that could be poems or fairy tales, stories sugary enough to be caloric. But you know what? That's just fine. It's refreshing to know there is still room on the sports pages for things other than rape charges and Dave Bliss and NCAA investigations.
