NEW YORK _ Historically on Labor Day, players are the ones getting the most strenuous workouts at the USTA National Tennis Center. But the biggest sweat they built up Monday was from walking up and down the stairs leading to and from the players' lounge _ a far cry from the activities originally on their agendas.

Mother Nature, though, had different plans.

Logging the most court time on this day at the U.S. Open were all the on-court personnel who were charged with one simple task: do everything in their power to soak up the wet stuff falling from the sky that made play an afterthought.
