DETROIT _ It was inevitable, and now it's official: The Tigers will finish last in the American League Central.
The Tigers (34-102) clinched the basement Monday with a 7-4 loss to the fourth-place Indians at rain-soaked Comerica Park. The club announced that 10,986 tickets were sold, but there appeared to be less than half that number.
The 1916 Philadelphia Athletics were the last team to clinch last place in a full season by Sept. 1.
The Indians hit three home runs, two by Ben Broussard, whose second off Jamie Walker (3-3) in the eighth broke a 4-4 tie and put Cleveland ahead for good.
