A recent study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine revealed that running outdoors on various surfaces is a better way to build bone density than running on a treadmill.
Low bone density can lead to osteoporosis and an increased risk of fractures.
If you do run outdoors, be careful to adjust your speed to the terrain in order to avoid falls or other injuries. If you haven't been exercising regularly, you may want to use a treadmill in the beginning to help avoid shin splints. And always consult a doctor before starting any exercise program.
