It's unnerving when a hurler loses control

JOHN BURKE AND BRUCE RUFFIN called it The Creature, that extreme wildness and hideous lack of control both pitchers fought to overcome.

They know the frustration, the anxiety, the helplessness and the embarrassment of being on the mound and throwing pitches nowhere near home plate, heaving some to the backstop.

Ruffin went through this torture twice and Burke once. They overcame it, to the degree possible. And when they watched Rick Ankiel of the St. Louis Cardinals, they winced. They know what it's like to be in the grip of The Creature.
