Colorado's Mike Hampton takes his pitching seriously
IT WAS THE END OF THE DOG DAYS OF spring training. Mike Hampton stood at his locker wearing a scowl more appropriate for a pennant race in late September. A handful of retirees and tourists at Tucson's Hi Corbett Field had just watched the Seattle Mariners rough him up in his last appearance of the spring. In 24 hours, you'd need a half dozen connections on your computer to find the linescore on the Internet, let alone anyone's consciousness.
But you could read the linescore all over Hampton's face. The media would that day, too. If they'd ever reach his locker.
