IT WAS ONE OF THOSE UNEXPECTED INCIDENTS THAT OCCUR SO FREQUENTLY IN baseball. Third baseman Bill Mueller of the Cubs was racing towards the stands in Busch Stadium, trying to catch a foul popup hit by the Cardinals' Bobby Bonilla in a Sunday afternoon game last May 13.
As he slid to make the catch, Mueller banged his knee on the metal underneath the stands down the third-base line. The force of the collision resulted in a fractured left kneecap for Mueller who was expected to be lost to the Cubs for at least two months.
Up to that point, Mueller had played a key role in the improvement of the Cubs in the early going of the 2001 pennant race. He was ...
