My father is a wonderful man, but he's not too big on music appreciation. He would take Dinah Shore's recording of "Buttons and Bows" over Don Giovanni any day, and he once joked that he always drove as fast as possible past the Texaco gas stations just because Texaco sponsored the Metropolitan Opera's Saturday-afternoon broadcasts.

In May, I informed him that he no longer had to give the stations a wide berth: OPERA NEWS had just learned that Texaco (in recent years, ChevronTexaco) had announced that its funding of the broadcasts--a philanthropic tradition stretching back to 1940--would end with the conclusion of the 2003-04 season.
