If you have trouble falling asleep at night, you're not alone. According to the National Sleep Foundation's 2002 Sleep in America poll, some 58 percent of the population experiences symptoms of insomnia--the inability to get enough sleep--several nights a week. Many who struggle with routine sleeplessness turn to sedatives, cough medicines or antihistamines, but unless you suffer from medical conditions such as sleep apnea (cessation of breathing for short periods of time), myoclonus (restless leg syndrome) or narcolepsy (attacks of deep sleep that prevent a good night's rest), you don't need those medications. For those who have trouble sleeping, however, there are a number of shortcuts that can help reestablish normal sleep patterns, including mind/body work--meditation, prayer or a physical routine such as tai chi--as well as supplements and herbs.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) identifies several different patterns of insomnia and suggests different solutions for each. For example, if you feel heat in your chest or heart area, are thirsty for chilled drinks, or have mouth sores and headaches, you can try using herbs such as kava, Siberian ginseng, chamomile, ...
