Bush hawks who think it will be easy to install democracy in Baghdad should pay close attention to elections in Turkey this weekend.

An Islamic party looks set to win. This, in Turkey _ a NATO member, a key U.S. ally in any Iraq war, and the only long-standing secular democracy in a mainly Muslim state.

This vibrant country literally links Asia to Europe via its modern highways, bridges, and the endless flow of international ships that ply the Bosporus. After World War I, its national hero, Mustapha Kemal Attaturk, transformed the remnants of the Ottoman empire into a secular nation-state with a Roman alphabet and without fez or veil.
