SANTA CRUZ, Calif. _ The last time Democrat Rusty Areias ran for state Senate, his unsuccessful battle against Santa Cruz Republican Bruce McPherson became the most expensive _ some would say nastiest _ legislative race in California history.
But this fall's battle in the 12th District against Salinas businessman Jeff Denham is even more venomous _ and it's already broken the $4.1 million record for campaign spending, with total spending expected to easily exceed $6 million.
