WASHINGTON _ As races for the U.S. Senate enter the final days, the Carolinas _ especially North Carolina _ are important for deciding control of the chamber in what analysts are calling one of the closest election years in memory.
Voters in both states can expect to see a frenzy of political advertising and telephone calls from the national parties between now and Nov. 5.
Going into this race, Republicans faced a disadvantage, at least on paper. Four influential Republican senators _ including Jesse Helms of North Carolina and Strom Thurmond of South Carolina _ are retiring at the end of this term while no Democrats have announced retirements.
But in recent months, Republicans have talked more and more about holding their seats and even winning new ones to take over the Senate.
More recently, unexpected events in Minnesota and New Jersey have tempered the hopes of top Republicans.
