A new law should make installing a car seat easier. But it's not going to be an overnight change.
All cars and car seats manufactured after Sept. 1 are required to have what's called the LATCH system, or Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. The LATCH system is made up of two metal bars or anchors located where the seat cushions meet and a tether hook behind the seat for forward-facing seats.
New car seats have straps with a hook on the end that simply attach to the metal bars. On outdated car seats, the car's seat belt is threaded through the back of the car seat and buckled in.
