BILOXI, Miss. _ The Biloxi Port Commission soon may be under state investigators' microscopes.
Although the State Auditor's Office will neither confirm nor deny that it is looking into the Biloxi Port Commission's finances, citizens have asked the agency to investigate, and said state investigators have contacted them.
The cash-strapped Port Commission has been struggling with its finances for more than a year. Commission officials blame the public agency's woes on escalating insurance costs and a dip in Harrison County tax funding.
The Port Commission, which is charged with overseeing four harbors and many city piers, receives about $1 million of its $3 million annual budget from county property taxes. Four years ago, Harrison County supervisors cut the commission's millage, which resulted in $400,000 less a year in revenue.
